Ukraine to adopt gluten-free food labeling

PKBR Staff Writer Published 09 February 2012

In a move to offer consumers a better choice to pick up food items during shopping, Ukraine has decided to implement a regulation for food producers to label their products as 'gluten-free', if they do not contain gluten.

Majority of the lawmakers have supported a draft designed to amend Article 38 of the law on safety and quality of food (information of citizens on the absence of gluten in food).

According to the draft proposal, food products free from gluten can be marked as 'gluten-free' on labels, if it does not exceed 20mg per 100gm of the product weight.

Ukrainian MP and author of the draft Viacheslav Perederiy (the BYT-Batkivschyna faction) said that 1% of Ukrainian residents suffer from gluten intolerance.

According to an assessment, nearly 500,000 Ukrainians are suffering undetected gluten enteropathy.
